Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is steam distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, also known as the narrow-leaved tea tree which is native to Australia. This oil has a fresh, medicinal, and herbal aroma and is popular for its powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.
Tea tree oil contains a compound called terpinen-4-ol that has been shown to increase the activity of the immune system, as well as have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties. This makes the oil useful to treat skin inflammation, acne, bacterial and fungal skin and nail infections, body odor, oral infections, and lice.
Tea tree oil is also an effective insect repellant and all-purpose household cleaner.
Directions for use
Use tea tree oil topically by diluting it in a ratio of 1 drop to 10ml of carrier oil and applying it to the affected areas, being careful to avoid contact with the eyes. You can also add 2-3 drops to a warm bath to soothe the body and treat skin conditions.
To treat head lice, blend 1 teaspoon of tea tree with 3 tablespoons of carrier oil and massage it into the scalp, letting it sit for 30 minutes-1 hour before combing through the hair and washing it out with shampoo.
Make a natural household cleaner and insect repellent by mixing 5-10 drops of tea tree oil with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle.
To decongest the sinuses, disinfect the environment and repel insects, add 2-3 drops to an oil burner or diffuser.
